Calculator Methodology
Transparent inputs, transparent formulas. This page explains how SolvaTool calculates lawn area, proposed mowing prices, and target gross margins.
Lawn area
For rectangular sections, the mowable area in square feet is the sum of length multiplied by width for each section, minus excluded square footage. Convert to acres by dividing by 43,560 and square yards by dividing by 9. Irregular yards are approximations and should be verified with measurements.
Mowing job duration
The quote calculator divides entered lawn area by the crew productivity rate (square feet per crew-hour). It applies a 0.5-hour minimum on-site mowing duration. This rate must reflect the whole crew and the equipment used. It does not automatically account for slope, obstacles, edging, weather, cleanup, or disposal.
Labor and vehicle cost
Labor expense = on-site crew hours × workers × hourly wage × (1 + labor burden percentage / 100). Round-trip vehicle allowance = one-way driving miles × 2 × entered cost per mile. The estimate also includes the user-entered allowance for equipment and supplies. Wage burden is intended to represent employer payroll-related costs where applicable; enter your actual number.
Gross margin and selling price
Total modeled cost = labor + round-trip vehicle allowance + equipment and supplies. Base selling price = modeled cost ÷ (1 − target gross margin). Frequency premium is applied to base price and recalculates the actual implied margin. A 30% target margin uses a divisor of 0.70, not a 30% markup. A separate profit margin calculator also permits allocated overhead.
Illustrative defaults
We show example initial values so visitors can explore the calculators without starting from blank fields. They are not researched U.S. averages and should never be quoted as local prices. Replace each value with your labor, fuel, equipment, productivity, and property assumptions.
PDF export and local processing
The estimate generator creates a one-page PDF using local JavaScript in your browser. The business and customer labels are included solely in that generated document and are not posted to our server as part of the calculation.
Testing and corrections
We test formula consistency and invalid-input handling during development. A valid mathematical result does not establish that a quote is commercially appropriate. If you find an error or inaccessible control, please send us a report.
